FCT workers, primary school teachers halt strike
Because the six area council chairmen have not implemented the new minimum wage of N70,000, the primary school teachers of the Local Education Authority (LEA) and the area council employees under the joint unions, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), in the Federal Capital Territory have suspended their strike.
After speaking to officials of both unions at Teachers House in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Friday, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim Kabi, President of NULGE in the Federal Capital Territory, announced the suspension of the strike during a joint news briefing.
He said that the state minister, Hajiya Mariya Mahmoud, the FCT minister, Nyemson Wike, and a few senior FCT administration officials intervened to bring about the decision.
According to him, the suspension was predicated on agreements made during lengthy discussions between the joint unions.
In order to improve the relationship between the two organisations and preserve industrial harmony, he said, one of the resolutions reached was to bridge the communication gap between the joint unions and the six area council chairmen.
To do this, a monthly consultative meeting between the council chairmen and the joint unions would take place on the last Thursday of each month to discuss the difficulties faced by the workers.
He added that it was decided that the new minimum salary would be applied consistently in February 2025 to all local council employees, including elementary school teachers.
