Federal government lifts five-year ban on mining operations in Zamfara
The five-year prohibition on mining operations in Zamfara State has been lifted, according to the Federal Government.
In a message posted on X (previously Twitter) on Sunday, Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake announced the decision, which aims to revitalise the local economy and address the security concerns facing the region.
The goal of the 2021 mining ban was to reduce the startling increase in illegal mining and banditry, which was thought to have increased insecurity and supported a shadow economy that provided funding for criminal organisations.
As time went on, Zamfara gained notoriety both domestically and abroad for its artisanal gold and other rich mineral mining.
But the prohibition hindered legal mining operations and left the area's economy in a vulnerable position.
According to reports, illegal mining has contaminated water sources in several towns and degraded the ecosystem.
