Federal government okays new grid to prevent power collapses

In an attempt to address Nigeria's frequent power grid collapses, the Federal Government has approved plans to construct a new Eastern-Western electricity grid.

This was revealed by Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, during the recent HBSAN energy conference in Lagos, where he presented strategies to fix persistent flaws in the nation's electrical transmission infrastructure.

Tegbe stated that Nigerians would start to reap the benefits of the projects in two to three years and that the government is getting ready to start the procurement process.

In order to understand the problems with the power sector and determine what should be prioritized, he disclosed that the government has initiated a technical audit throughout the entire nation.

“We have clustered Nigeria into three energy zones. The first one is the one that demands 50 per cent. If you fix Lagos and you fix the Abuja corridors, you’ve solved more than half of the problem of Nigeria. Because you can’t do that alone based on operational efficiency, you also have to build out your grid.

The President has given his approval for us to start constructing the East and Western grid. The Minister stated, "We're going through the procurement process, but you'll see the benefits in two to three years."

According to the minister, the purpose of the technical audit of the electrical infrastructure is to find flaws and identify which facilities need to be replaced or repaired immediately.

According to him, the goal of the exercise was to make sure that rather than allocating money to the incorrect equipment, interventions addressed the root causes of issues.
