FG announces May 2023 as new data for census
According to Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, the population and housing census for 2023, which had been set for March 29 before, has been moved to May 2023.
At the conclusion of the Federal Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja, Lai informed State House reporters of this.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponement of the gubernatorial and state assembly elections from March 11 to March 18 prompted the decision to move the census, the minister claims.
He also revealed that N2.8 billion had been authorised by the council for the National Population Commission (NPC) to purchase some software for the census.
“There was a memo presented by the National Population Commission, seeking some software to allow them to conduct the census in May this year. I believe because of the rescheduling of the elections, they cannot commence the census as scheduled.
"They sought council’s approval for a contract to procure software for the census at the sum of N2.8 billion,†he said.
