FG helped evacuate 1,531 Nigerians from Ukraine– Minister of Foreign Affairs
On Thursday, the Federal Government announced that it had transported 1,531 stranded Nigerians from Ukraine via air.
On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, significantly escalating the conflict that had started in February 2014.
Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, claimed that since 2015, the government had assisted thousands of citizens in making their way home.
At the 22nd iteration of the Buhari Administration Scorecard Series, Onyeama addressed in Abuja (2015-2023).
Among others, he said that over the past eight years, Nigerians in Libya, Mali, Sudan, Cote d'Ivoire, and Senegal received assistance.
According to the minister, more people, mainly women and girls, are falling prey to human trafficking in these nations.
Additionally, he remembered the evacuation of more than 100 people who had been left stranded in Russia following the 2018 World Cup.
The senior official claimed that Nigerians had lately been evacuated from India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In appreciation for its assistance with the repatriations, Onyeama praised the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The UN agency assists governments, migrants, refugees, and internally displaced people with issues related to migration.
