FG set to review minimum wage in less than two years— Minister
In fewer than two years, the new minimum wage will be reassessed, according to Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the minister of state for labour and employment.
Speaking to reporters Thursday in Umuahia following a meeting with labour leaders in Abia, Ms. Onyejeocha made this statement.
She claimed that by making sure the minimum wage was reviewed after three years, President Bola Tinubu was keeping his word to Nigerian workers.
According to her, the president genuinely cared about the well-being of his employees and would fulfil all of his commitments to them.
“We are not going to allow minimum wage review to be forever.
“It used to be about five years, but now, in three year’s time, which is less than two years, we will also review the minimum wage,” Ms Onyejeocha said.
She says it has been recorded and it has been said. In July 2024, Mr. Tinubu authorised a minimum salary of N70,000, promising to reassess it every three years.
After spending her Christmas and New Year holidays in the state, Ms. Onyejeocha, a native of Abia, said she made the decision to meet with the labour leaders, whom she referred to as her constituents, "to wish them well."
She claimed to have reminded the authorities that workers are an essential component of the government and should contribute to maintaining peace and stability throughout the nation as a whole, not just at work.
