FG vaccinated 15 million children against diphtheria
Since the start of the diphtheria response, more than five million children have received the pentavalent vaccine and ten million children have received the tetanus-diphtheria vaccine, according to Prof. Muhammad Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
At the ministerial press briefing series held by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation on Wednesday, Pate revealed this.
The pentavalent vaccine offers protection against hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type B, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, and diphtheria.
Tetanus and diphtheria are prevented by the Td vaccination.
Nigeria has reported 16,248 instances of diphtheria and 646 deaths from 2022, according to a statement made last Friday by Dr. Jide Idris, Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
Nigeria is now dealing to multiple illnesses, including measles, meningitis, and Lassa fever.
Pate established an emergency team in September 2023 to contain the nation's diphtheria outbreak.
