Fire destroys shops, properties worth millions Yobe market
A well-known market in Gashu'a town, Yobe State, was destroyed by an early-morning fire, demolishing stores selling products valued at millions of Naira.
Less than a week has passed after a similar event at the Damaturu Bayan-Tasha market.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the fire's existence and stated that it is working with the Bade Local Government Council to carry out an initial evaluation in order to gather resources and assist small business owners who depend on daily sales to provide for their families.
"We are deeply saddened by the devastating fire incident in Gashua and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the victims and their families.
“As we prepare for a comprehensive response, we urge all communities to stay vigilant this harmattan season and take necessary precautions to prevent further incidents.
“Together, we will overcome this challenge,” the statement said.
Senator Musa Mustapha of Yobe East, meanwhile, has voiced concern about the state's ongoing market fire breakouts and the resulting destruction of property and products.
When he responded to the most recent fire outbreak in Gashua Kaiya Kaiya Market on his official Facebook page, he showed worry.
“I reiterate my call to our marketers to be extraordinary careful in handling fire-prone materials especially during this harmattan season to forestall re-occurrence,” he said.
As at the time this report was filled out, the cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
