Following a fire at a nearby store that stored plastic containers, there was a noticeable sense of anxiety in the Old Garage neighborhood of Osogbo, Osun State, on Sunday.

Firefighters were still fighting to put out the fire as our correspondent left the area at around 7:10 p.m.; the incident had been reported to the operatives at around 2 p.m.

The impacted store, where plastic containers were stored, is situated near the Nigeria Police Force's Dugbe Divisional Headquarters in Osogbo and a gas station.

As the firefighters fought valiantly to keep the roaring inferno from spreading to other surrounding properties, the position of the damaged business increased the anxiety of everyone there.

Around 2:00 pm, smoke was seen coming from the storey building where plastic containers were stored, according to Modupe Olatoye, a petty trader close to the impacted store.

“We observed that smoke was coming from the building around 2pm and we immediately contacted Oke Fia, Osogbo fire station.

“The firemen responded very early and they have been battling to put it out since then. The store is located right in the middle of some buildings and near a filing station.

“The fear that the fire may spread is really causing panic but the firemen are still working to prevent it from spreading beyond this point,” Olatoye said.

About five fire vehicles were sent out, according to Osun Fire Service spokesperson Ibrahim Adekunle

“We are still battling to prevent escalation. About five fire trucks have been deployed to work. The cause of the fire is not known yet. The incident was reported to us around 2:pm.

“Investigation will be conducted after we have successfully put out the fire,” Adekunle said.
