First Niger Bridge reopened by FG
Six weeks after announcing that the bridge would be closed for repairs, the Federal Government has reopened the First Niger Bridge to automobile traffic.
At a ceremony in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, Minister of Works David Umahi declared the bridge open for public use. He described the intervention as part of President Bola Tinubu's efforts to maintain vital national infrastructure and enhance transportation nationwide.
According to Umahi, concerns about the bridge's structural condition—including reports of missing bolts on its steel components, inadequate maintenance, and other actions that could weaken the structure—led to the rehabilitation.
According to him, the project included resurfacing, solar-powered streetlights, closed-circuit television cameras, and other traffic safety measures in addition to structural repairs.
In order to enhance traffic control, especially during emergencies and vehicle breakdowns, the minister also mentioned the installation of median barriers and three designated turnaround points.
In order to improve surveillance surrounding the facility, he also revealed that security monitoring centers were being set up at both ends of the bridge.
He claimed that the actions were required to shield the aging structure from activities that could jeopardize its durability, such as excessive loading and traffic congestion.
