Fleeing suspect kills 23-year-old Nigerian graduate in the US
Oluwalayomi "Layo" Fadero, a 23-year-old Nigerian graduate living in the United States, was killed when a suspect evading police drove against traffic and struck her automobile in Nashville.
The deadly incident occurred last Friday, according to a Tuesday report from local broadcaster WSMV Nashville. Ray Eugene Padgett, the suspect, is accused of trying to elude law police by entering oncoming lanes.
Fadero, a recent Fisk University graduate, was reportedly traveling along Murfreesboro Pike into her neighborhood when the suspect's car crashed into the driver's side of her car, instantly killing her.
The collision, according to Metro Nashville Police, was the result of several earlier incidents that day, beginning with the alleged theft of a Ford F-250 truck from a North Nashville dealership. The defendant struck the car owner's vehicle while running, according to the authorities, and then smashed into an unmarked police SUV. This led to a five-minute chase that reached speeds of nearly eighty miles per hour.
“At about 2:30 p.m., the suspect drove into oncoming traffic and struck the victim’s vehicle,” police authorities were quoted as saying.
Fadero was declared dead at the spot by rescue personnel after the collision's impact allegedly forced her car approximately 100 yards into a ditch. She was an innocent driver who had nothing to do with the pursuit, officials emphasized.
After being captured, Padgett, 52, was brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before being placed under arrest.
He is accused with several felonies, including attempted criminal homicide, reckless endangerment, vehicular homicide by recklessness, and criminally negligent homicide, according to the police.
