Flood affects more than one million people in Maiduguri, damages properties
According to the authorities, severe flooding in northeastern Nigeria has killed at least thirty people and damaged over a million more.
On Tuesday, the Alau dam on the Ngadda river in Borno State collapsed, forcing villagers to escape their homes and causing some of the worst floods the state has seen in thirty years.
The dam was full on Wednesday, according to the state government, because of the very heavy rains. Authorities anticipated a higher death toll.
Over 600 people were murdered nationwide by Nigeria's worst floods in ten years, which occurred over two years ago. The number of fatalities was reported to be 30 on Wednesday by National Emergency Management Agency spokesman Ezekiel Manzo.
“One million people have been affected so far,” said an aide for Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, adding that as efforts to document displaced people begin, that number could rise to nearly two million.
Since the central market was damaged by the floodwaters, Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, residents have complained that food has become more expensive.
A local zoo was partially devastated by the whirling waves, and several animals managed to escape. Following the death of an escaped crocodile close to her home, Mary Mamza, a resident of Maiduguri, claimed that residents were terrified to leave their houses.
