Flood ravages Trademore estate in Abuja

Residents of Trademore Estate in Abuja have spoken about the flood that wreaked havoc on the neighbourhood early on Friday after a downpour around the Nigerian capital.

After the hours-long downpour, a sizable portion of the estate, which is situated in the Lugbe axis of the capital city along the airport route, was submerged.

PREMIUM TIMES went to the estate on Saturday morning and saw that the flood had destroyed and displaced a number of homes, cars, shops, and other items.

At around 12:30 p.m., inhabitants of the estate discovered a corpse wedged behind the drainage pipe at the entrance to the estate as our reporters were questioning residents.

Alhaji Ashiru, a police inspector who had just been assigned to the region and was relating how the flood had caused him to lose all of his possessions, hurried to have the corpse pulled out of the canal with the assistance of nearby locals.

Our reporters alerted the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) after seeing the body being recovered.

NEMA's spokesman, Manzo Ezekiel, reaffirmed that the organization would send officers to the estate to continue looking for more missing people.

In order to avert further disasters, Mr. Ezekiel stated that NEMA is also working with nearby neighbours and other agencies.

Nevertheless, this is not the first time the estate has flooded. It now happens every year during the wet season. A similar catastrophe last year resulted in multiple fatalities, and locals described it as the worst in the previous ten years.
