Former IGP Usman Alkali Baba withdraws from Yobe gubernatorial race
Usman Alkali Baba, a former Inspector-General of Police, has pulled out of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship contest in Yobe State.
In a statement provided to reporters, Baba declared his departure.
The retired police chief was one of six APC candidates for governorship who had previously objected to Baba Malam Wali's rise to prominence and demanded that direct primaries be held in accordance with the Electoral Act of 2026 and APC regulations.
In the statement, Baba stated that he made the decision to get out of the race after speaking with a number of people, including Borno State elders, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
“After due consultations and exhaustive meetings with the Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, the Executive Governors of Yobe and Borno state, elders and political associates, as well as some very critical stakeholders across the seventeen Local Government Areas, I have decided to withdraw my aspiration to the governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.
He said that the choice was made voluntarily for the sake of the state's advancement, stability, and party unity.
“Having made this decision, we have to but urge our teaming supporters to remain calm, law-abiding and continue to support our great party, the APC, as well as the eventual gubernatorial candidate”, he added.
