Four kids found alive in the jungle weeks following Columbia plane crash

In a jungle where a jet had crashed two weeks previously, the Colombian military, firefighters, and civil aviation authority personnel found four youngsters still alive.

According to local media, President Gustavo Petro made the announcement on Wednesday. He stated the finding was made in an indigenous hamlet in the country's southern Caqueta department of Colombia.

In the early hours of May 1, the Cessna 206 aircraft carrying seven passengers experienced engine trouble while flying between Araracuara, in the Amazonas province, and San Jose del Guaviare, a city in the Guaviare province.

“After arduous searching by our military, we have found alive the four children who went missing after a plane crash in Guaviare. A joy for the country,” Petro said in a message via Twitter.

The bodies of three persons who perished in the disaster, including the pilot, were discovered inside the aircraft. The 11-month-old baby and the four kids, ages 13, 9, 4, and, survived the collision.

The children apparently evacuated the aircraft and ventured into the rainforest in search of help, according to earlier information from the civil aviation authority, which organised the rescue operations.

Rescuers had previously discovered abandoned fruit that the kids had eaten for survival as well as makeshift shelters fashioned of wild vegetation with the help of search dogs.

The rescue efforts involved both army and air force aircraft and helicopters from Colombia.
