Four suspected bandits nabbed at Ondo airport
Following a coordinated security operation involving aviation and local security services, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has confirmed the arrest of four suspected bandits in the area of Akure Airport, Ondo State.
Henry Agbebire, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, said in a statement on Sunday that the arrests were made in response to a distress call that suspicious people were seen approaching the Eleyewo village from behind the airport's perimeter.
“Security personnel comprising FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and other local security outfits immediately launched a joint search operation,” Agbebire said.
Some others tried to escape the area, he continued, but four suspects were eventually captured and turned over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for additional questioning.
FAAN emphasized the significance of bolstering airport perimeter security and praised the "swift collaboration among aviation security personnel, the military, the police, and local security groups, including Amotekun and community vigilantes, whose joint efforts led to the arrest."
The authority added that the Federal Government has expedited the installation of contemporary perimeter fencing and improved security infrastructure at airports across the country through the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, with backing from the President.
“Work has already commenced in phases to ensure that airports under FAAN are better secured against unlawful access and other security threats,” Agbebire said.
Travelers and airport host communities were reassured by FAAN of its "unwavering commitment to maintaining the safety and security of all airport facilities nationwide."
