French media sue X for running content without payment
On Tuesday, a number of prominent French newspapers announced that they were suing social networking company X for allegedly distributing their content without paying them.
According to a statement, Le Figaro, Les Echos, Le Parisien, Le Monde, Telerama, Courrier International, Huffington Post, Malesherbes Publications, and Le Nouvel Obs are spearheading the collective campaign against the social networking platform owned by US billionaire Elon Musk.
They claim that the website, which was formerly known as Twitter, violates the so-called neighbouring rights that are owed when social media sites republish news information in accordance with a European directive that was incorporated into French law.
AFP and the newspapers had already requested an emergency injunction against X, which they claim is not negotiating.
A Paris judgement ruled in favour of the media businesses on May 24 and granted X two months to submit commercial data so that they could determine how much money it makes from their content.
In support of their most recent lawsuit, the newspapers said that the social media platform "has not yet complied" with this ruling, "demonstrating its continued intent to avoid its legal obligations."
