Full tuition not needed to obtain Canada study permit
To be eligible to apply for a study visa in Canada, international students are no longer required to pay all or a portion of their tuition costs.
According to the Economic Times, a Canadian Federal Court decided that international students can be invited to apply for a study permit and will not be penalized for unpaid tuition during the application submission stage as long as they can demonstrate their ability to pay for tuition and other expenses when necessary.
The case included an Iranian student who applied for a study permit but had it denied by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) because the student had not paid his or her tuition (Tehrani v. Canada).
The decision removes a hurdle for foreigners seeking to enroll in academic programs in Canada who might not be able to cover all or a portion of their tuition at the time they apply for a study permit.
According to information made public by the IRCC, Canada will admit over 550,000 new international students in 2022, with Indian students continuing to benefit the most with over 226,450 visas granted.
