Gov Abba Yusuf orders arrest of dethroned Emir of Kano
Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, has imposed the immediate arrest of Aminu Ado Bayero, the deposed emir of Kano, on the grounds that he is inciting strife inside the state. This order was issued just two days after the governor removed Bayero.
The governor's spokesperson, Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, sent a press release early on Saturday morning claiming that the previous emir attempted to retake the palace by force yesterday night by smuggling him into Kano city.
The announcement, which was made at 7:00 AM in Kano, verified that at around 1:00 AM on Saturday, the Governor, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker of the State Assembly, and other high-ranking government officials had followed the new Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to the palace.
"As the Chief security officer of the state, His Excellency the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed emir with immediate effect for disturbance of public peace and trying to destroy the relative peace the state enjoys,” read the statement from Mr. Tofa, who serves as the Director General of Media and Publicity at the Government House in Kano.
In the statement, the government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding law and order and warned that any actions that jeopardised this stability would face harsh consequences.
As the crisis develops, everyone is keeping a close eye on Kano State to see how the authorities would handle the arrest and the ensuing legal proceedings. There is little question that the political and social fabric of the state will be affected by these acts.
