Gov Adeleke pardons Osun resident sentenced to death for stealing chicken, eggs
Segun Olowookere, who was given a hanging death sentence for stealing a chicken and eggs in 2010, has been pardoned by Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Adeleke granted the prerogative of mercy to 53 prisoners, including Olowookere, in a statement issued on Thursday. The governor also pardoned Sunday Morakinyo, Olowookere's co-defendant.
Following an interview that his parents agreed to, Olowookere's story went viral and caused widespread outrage.
The parents said in an interview with Nigerian actress Biola Adebayo that Olowookere was arrested by Osun command police for a crime he did not commit.
His father, Olanrewaju, stated that a divisional police officer (DPO) requested N30,000 from him for his son's rerelease, despite the fact that at the time he could only afford N20,000.
Nigerians were urged by Olowookere's parents to step in and aid ease their son's suffering. Adeleke ordered Osun's attorney general and commissioner for justice to launch a thorough investigation into the incident after the video went viral.
