Gov. Seyi Makinde cancels birthday party to honour Ibadan stampede victims
In remembrance of the children who perished in a stampede at a children's funfair in the state capital of Ibadan, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has cancelled his birthday party.
This was revealed by the governor on Friday in Ibadan at the reception of the Peoples Democratic Party's South-East delegation, which was headed by Senator Adolphus Wabara, the party's chairman of the board of trustees.
He said he would cancel his birthday celebrations for December 25th and spend the day alone inside, calling the incident—which killed 35 children—painful, regrettable, and avoidable.
“It is a day that is really sobering for me personally. Not only did I cancel the event in Ebonyi, I told everyone that I would stay indoors on my birthday. There is no party; I have sent the message out,” Makinde said.
“It has been a difficult year, really. Early in the year, we had the Bodija explosion. We managed through quite a bit. But we are strengthened by the show of support for us, to let us know that we are not alone in facing all of these.”
Noting that they were the first to offer condolences for the tragic event, the governor thanked the BOT chairman and other party leaders for their visit.
