Governor Aiyedatiwa orders release of 19 prisoners
In honour of Nigeria's 64th anniversary of independence, Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has used the prerogative of mercy by ordering the release of 19 prisoners incarcerated in the state's various prisons for varying sentences.
The 19 prisoners are among the 117 prisoners presently serving jail sentences who are expected to gain from the use of the prerogative of power.
The governor acted in accordance with the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy's recommendations, emphasising a dedication to rehabilitation and second chances within the legal system.
Nineteen prisoners will be released immediately, and several others will have their death sentences reduced to life in prison.
The governor's decision was made public on Monday in a statement signed by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the Commissioner for Justice and State Attorney General, who also serves as the Chairman of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
According to the announcement, Governor Aiyedatiwa signed the release orders on September 27, 2024, and the modifications went into effect on October 1, 2024, in time for the commemoration of the 64th anniversary of the country's independence.
The statement claims that Governor Aiyedatiwa's actions are compliant with Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 Constitution Section 212 (1) (2) (as amended).
