Suspected armed herders have attacked the Agbo Vengav Udam hamlet in Benue State's Gwer West Local Government Area, killing at least seven people.  

Around 7 p.m. on Thursday, the attackers broke into the community and began shooting randomly, killing seven people instantly and kidnapping three more, according to PUNCH Online.  

According to a local source who requested anonymity, the attackers got into the hamlet by way of a border village in Otukpo LGA.

“They passed through the border village of Otukpo and, entering into Agbo, they shot their guns sporadically, killing the seven people on the spot. They took away three people with them,” a resident of the affected community who did not want to state his name said.

It was learnt that the attackers had taken the mother hostage and that one of the victims had been an infant.  

The witness further stated that the families of the two surviving deceased chose to bury their loved ones right away, while five of the bodies have been placed in a Naka mortuary.  

Residents claim that because of the incident, they have fled their homes out of fear of more attacks.
