Gunmen attack Plateau community, kill 13, injure many
In a new attack on the Ngbra Zongo hamlet in the Kwall District of the Bassa Local Government Area, suspected gunmen are said to have killed at least 13 people in Plateau State.
A number of inhabitants suffered varied degrees of injuries as a result of the tragedy, which happened early on Friday and sent the town into a state of panic.
Mr. Philip Alanga, a Jos resident, informed reporters that the assailants broke into the neighborhood at around midnight, firing randomly before attacking people with machetes and other lethal weapons.
He claimed that the attackers targeted innocent inhabitants as they went from home to house, leaving a path of damage and death in their wake.
“They came into the community around midnight and started shooting and hacking people to death. They moved from one house to another, attacking innocent people,” Alanga said.
He clarified that while a number of locals were hurt and in critical need of medical care, many others ran into the surrounding bushes to avoid the violence.
Mr. Danjuma Auta, Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), confirmed the occurrence and called the attack "barbaric, tragic, and condemnable."
Auta called on security forces to bolster surveillance and provide sufficient protection for vulnerable rural areas, lamenting the frequent attacks on communities in Bassa Local Government Area and other parts of Plateau State.
In order to stop more violence in the neighborhood, he called on security personnel to quickly capture the murderers and make sure they are prosecuted.
