Gunmen kill YPP chairman in Anambra
Chief Joe Mohel, the Chairman of the Young Progressives Party, Nanka Ward 1, was shot and killed by an unidentified individual.
Nanka is located in Anambra State's Orumba North Local Government Area.
According to information obtained, the incident occurred late on Saturday, just after a meeting between community members and Chinwe Nnabuife, the representative for Orumba North and South Federal Constituency.
According to local sources, the purpose of the meeting was to discuss a recent ruling by the Appeal Court ordering a rerun of the election between Nnabuife and Okwudili Ezenwankwo, the PDP candidate for the Orumba North and South Federal Constituency in the general election of 2023.
According to reports, the deceased planned the gathering for Nnabuife, a member of the House of Representatives, and other constituency residents.
An eyewitness, who did not want his name mentioned said, “He was killed last (Saturday) night after organising a meeting between the member representing Orumba North and South in the Federal House of Representatives, Chinwe Nnabuife, and her Nanka constituents.
“The unidentified persons, who arrived in a Lexus 350 SUV, fired several shots into the air before fatally shooting Mohel at the village hall. They also kidnapped one person.
“Nnabuife was threatened not to campaign in Nanka where the Appeal Court ordered for a rerun election. But on Saturday, she went to hold a meeting with YPP members in Nanka Ward 1.
“The meeting was organised by Mohel. Immediately after Nnabuife left, some thugs arrived at the venue in an SUV vehicle and opened fire on the ward chairman.â€
Moses Obi, the YPP's state chairman, acknowledged the development when contacted, although he added that the specifics were still unclear.
“Yes, we have heard about it, but we don’t have the full details yet. We are preparing to reach the community and by the time we have all the full details, we will let you know,†Obi added.
Upon being contacted, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the state police, stated that the command had not been informed of any incidents.
But in order to take further action, Ikenga urged the impacted parties to go to the closest police station and file a report about the incident.
