Gunmen set Anambra police station on fire, killing three officers
In the southeast Nigerian state of Anambra, three police officers were killed on Saturday when gunmen bombed the Ogidi Police Divisional Headquarters in Idemili North Local Government Area.
Early in the day, according to what PREMIUM TIMES has learned, the incident took place.
This newspaper was informed by sources that many gunmen carrying explosives broke into the police station.
“Many policemen were killed by the gunmen,†Amos Udo, a resident of the community said.
According to Mr. Udo, the attack's random gunfire startled many locals, prompting some of them to abandon their homes despite the attack's intense darkness.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State police spokesperson, confirmed the event in a statement on Saturday.
According to Mr. Ikenga, a deputy superintendent of police, the attackers killed three police officers.
“The Anambra State Police Command has reinforced security in Idemili North Local Government Area following the attack on the Ogidi Area Command in the early hours of Saturday, 18 February 2023, where three policemen paid the supreme price,†he said.
The police spokesperson said the gunmen threw improvised explosive devices and petrol bombs which enabled them to gain access to the facility.
“Unfortunately, the buildings in the police facility were affected,†he said.
Mr. Ikenga bemoaned the attack's loss of life and other goods.
He declared that the state's police would continue to fight crime "resolutely" throughout the state.
