Heavy snow in Japan leaves 17 dead, 93 injured
Heavy snowfall in Japan has resulted in 93 injuries and at least 17 fatalities.
The data was obtained on Monday morning from Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency. There were more than the 11 killed on Saturday.
Residents were advised by officials to use caution when clearing snow from their homes. Many of the latest fatalities happened when people fell while clearing snow off their rooftops after it had fallen onto them.
This included a 70-year-old woman who was discovered at her house in Nagai, roughly 180 miles north of Tokyo, under a mound of snow.
A transmission tower for electric power was destroyed by the country's significant snowfall in the north, which left about 20,000 people without power on Christmas morning. Later that day, according to officials, most of the impacted area had power again.
Additionally, the weather caused problems with transportation. On Sunday, dozens of trains and airplanes had their trips cancelled. Deliveries of mochi from Niigata, a traditional component of New Year's feasts, could potentially be delayed due to delivery issues.
