Hit-and-run driver crushes pedestrian to death in Lagos
A pedestrian was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Saturday, barely two days into the new year, shortly after the Mobil petrol station and heading out of Lagos towards the Otedola Bridge.
This was announced in a statement released in Lagos on Saturday by Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos Territorial Coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
According to Farinloye, the victim's body was unidentifiable and the body was also mangled by fast-moving cars.
In order to stop the mangled body from being further crushed by passing cars, he said that the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) had been notified.
Farinloye asked Nigerians to be extremely cautious of their safety throughout the holiday season.
He claimed that deaths seen in the regular patrol during the holiday season along the main thoroughfares made the appeal necessary.
“Just yesterday evening, an articulated truck, which had brake failure, hit a woman at Dalemo bus stop, Ado Odo/Ota LGA, Ogun State and she died on the spot.
“All efforts to reach out to her family members have been futile due to lack of means of identity that could have helped to trace her relations.
“Therefore, NEMA is urging residents around this areas who have not been able to trace their missing relative to contact FRSC Officer, Akowe of the Ota Unit with Tel nos: 08109257844, 08059090151,†Farinloye said.
He stated that in order to support lead agencies in their efforts to promote road safety and to ensure a timely, effective, and efficient response to any emergency that may arise, NEMA had been monitoring major highways during the holiday season.
In light of Farinloye's advice, commuters should treat drivers with respect and caution when they appear tired, exhausted, or sleepy while operating a vehicle.
He advised that in order to get the driver to stop and take a break before continuing on, the issue needs to be brought to the notice of the nearest safety officers.
