House destroyed as two communities in Anambra fight over land
One of the families in the community is now homeless after a protracted land dispute between the Umuogu family of Umueze village and the Uruowelle kindred of Nkwelle village, both in Umunnachi, Dunukofia local government area of Anambra State, resulted in the destruction of his compound's walls and setting of his house on fire.
Chukwuebuka Okenwa, the home's owner, left the neighbourhood after receiving a rumoured threat to his life. Despite a Supreme Court decision in the case, the demolition went ahead since one of the parties allegedly promised to disobey the court's orders.
The fence and cottage were demolished when one of the parties recently trespassed on the disputed territory.
The damage happened soon after the resolution and the report detailing the conclusions of the Umunnachi Peace and Reconciliation Committee, which was chaired by Dr. Peter Offorah, were published.
The land dispute reportedly began many years ago, and after multiple attempts to resolve it by different bodies, the Uruowelle kindred, represented by Chiefs Michael Onwuka, Augustine Okeke, and Patrick Oraegbunam, sued their Umuogu kindred neighbours in Awka High Court.
