Hunger in Africa, set to increase as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict
On Wednesday, Moussa Faki, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) commission declared that Africa has become a collateral victim of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. “By profoundly upsetting the fragile global geopolitical and geostrategic balance, it (Ukraine conflict) has also cast a harsh light on the structural fragility of African economies,’’ says Faki. According to him, the ongoing conflict has led to a reduced supply of agricultural products and an increase In the prices of food. “The most emblematic sign of these fragilities is the food crisis following the climatic disorders, the health crisis of COVID-19, amplified today by the conflict in Ukraine,’’ Faki said. Due to the heavy reliance on imports from Russia and Ukraine, African countries have been greatly affected.
Also, the conflict in Ukraine has resulted in a 21 per cent increase in the price of fertilizers, thereby affecting African populations relying solely on agriculture. According to reports, a shortage of food products and fertilizer supply chain will increase hunger in Africa.
