Ibadan explosion leaves two dead, dozens injured as buildings collapse
Governor Makinde of Oyo state said on Wednesday that an explosion at a private property containing explosives resulted in at least two fatalities and numerous injuries.
Witnesses claimed that the explosion on Tuesday caused several houses to collapse, forcing terrified people into the streets.
The governor, Seyi Makinde, stated in a statement that 77 individuals received medical attention for injuries, the majority of whom were released. Two fatalities were reported.
"Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast," Makinde added.
The explosion was audible in Ibadan, the state capital, which is located 130 kilometres (80 miles) away from Lagos, the commercial hub of Nigeria.
Makinde announced that search and rescue efforts were in progress and that individuals who had lost their homes would receive temporary housing from the state administration.
