IG of police sued over delayed promotion
In the National Industrial Court in Abuja, 4,449 police officers have accused the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police of neglecting to award them their new ranks following the Police Service Commission's approval of their promotions.
The lawsuit centres on the IG's purported failure to carry out the PSC's 19th plenary ruling, which authorised their promotions in line with the PSC Act.
The claimants' attorney, Muka'ila Mavo, asked the court to order the Nigeria Police Force and the IG to immediately carry out the authorised promotions during Tuesday's hearing, which was chaired by Justice R.B. Haastrup.
“The Supreme Court has also affirmed this position, granting judicial backing to the PSC’s authority over promotions and discipline within the police force,” Mavo argued.
ACP Isa Garba, the Nigeria Police Force's attorney, responded by declining to go into further detail, saying that the Force Public Relations Officer would be better qualified to do so.
The matter was postponed until December 18 for a follow-up hearing by Justice Haastrup.
