IGP orders arrest of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti
Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat musician who was seen on camera beating a police officer in uniform, has been placed under custody, according to Inspector-General of Police Usman Baba.
The event happened in Lagos, according to a statement released on Saturday by the police spokeswoman, Muyiwa Adejobi.
The late Afrobeat superstar Fela Anikulapo Kuti's youngest kid is Mr. Kuti.
The singer was seen punching an officer in a video that was posted online. The cop didn't take offence in the little video, though.
“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly,†the statement reads.
“IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.â€
On his Instagram account, Mr. Kuti responded late on Saturday night and claimed he was the incident's victim.
He claimed the policeman attempted to kill him and his family.
“He tried to kill me and my family.
I have the proof, but I no dey chase clout,†he posted.
“He has apologised, and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no lose him job.â€
