INEC establishes more registration centres in Anambra

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Anambra State has established an additional 25 registration centres, bringing the total to 87 centres in the state.

The State Commissioner for Elections, Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, made a statement on ongoing continuous voter registration during a press conference in the state on Tuesday. According to him, setting up additional centres was one of the Commission's actions to counteract the sudden surge in the number of people seeking registration. He also said the commission has also reopened all centres in the state that had been closed due to the insecurity. “I am pleased to report that the Commission has established an additional 25 registration centres in Anambra State and that they began operations at 9:00 am today. The additional centrees bring the total number of centres in Anambra to 87,” he said. “We have also reopened some LGA offices that were closed due to the insecurity. Specifically on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, the Idemili North LGA Office has reopened. Today, June 14, 2022, we resumed registration exercise at LGAs Ogbaru and Ayamelum.” He also said that the Commission has reorganized its operational procedure, separating people who use biometric services from those who need non-biometric services. According to him, the biometric services include re-enrollment, while the non-biometric services include PVC replacement applications, voter transfers and updates.

Orji said those requesting non-biometric services do not have to come to the enrollment centres but should do so with their Android phones. He also said that immediately after the transfer, update and exchange were complete, the person would receive a message picking up their PVC in preferred areas. “These services are available through the Commission's CVR portal. However, we have deployed staff to support those who do not have access to the online portal at the various registration centres. In areas where the security situation allows, we would extend our opening hours from 9 am to 3 pm. We will continue to expand our public communications to inform and educate the public," he said. Orji said the commission had suspended the employees accused of money extortion and an investigation into the matter was underway. He appealed to registrants to show patience, understanding and cooperation during this challenging time.
