Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti released on bail.
According to the state-aligned ISNA, one of Iran's most well-known actresses, who was detained after she denounced the execution of a man participating in widespread protests, was released on bond on Wednesday.
The hanging of Mohsen Shekari, who died last month in the first recorded execution connected to the protests, was criticized by Taraneh Alidoosti, who acted in the 2016 Oscar-winning picture "The Salesman." Shekari allegedly stabbed a Basij paramilitary at a rally in Tehran on September 23 and was found guilty of "waging war against God."
The reformist publication Shargh Daily published a photo of Alidoosti on the street after her release from the infamous Evin prison without the traditional Islamic hijab covering. Alidoosti's lawyer told ISNA that she was released on bail.
She was pictured clutching flowers with fans in another social media post upon her release.
Alidoosti is well-known for her activism in the MeToo movement in the Iranian film industry and was one of many Iranian celebrities who expressed support for the protests. She has appeared in numerous well-liked Iranian TV shows.
A public letter demanding Alidoosti's release was signed by more than 500 famous people, including actors, playwrights, writers, and directors. Several well-known people, including Emma Thompson, Mark Ruffalo, Penélope Cruz, Kate Winslet, and Kristen Stewart, signed the open letter, which was headed "Free Taraneh Alidoosti."
Despite not having a formal accusation against her, Alidoosti was first detained for "lack of evidence for her claims" in connection with her demonstration against Shekari's hanging.
Feminist activist Alidoosti last month posted an Instagram photo of herself holding a sign that read "Women, Life, Freedom" while not wearing the Islamic headscarf to indicate her support for the protest movement.
Several Iranians have received death by execution sentences during the nationwide demonstrations that were spurred by the killing of Mahsa Amini, 22, who was killed after being detained by the state's morality police for reportedly not properly donning her headscarf.
Her passing caused a stir in the Islamic Republic, and well-known public figures spoke out in favor of the cause. Since then, the protests have consolidated around a number of complaints against the autocratic government.
