Israeli air strikes kill eight Syrian soldiers

Eight troops were killed by Israeli attacks early on Wednesday in southern Syria, according to Syrian official media. The Israeli army claimed that the strikes were in retaliation for earlier rocket firing.

Fears of a new front in Israel's fight with Hamas in Gaza have been raised by persistent rocket and artillery exchanges with allied Palestinian factions and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah over Israel's northern borders with Syria and Lebanon.

“Around 1:45 am (2245 GMT Tuesday), the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial aggression from the occupied Golan Heights,” Syrian state media said.

They added that in addition to causing material damage, the strikes also injured seven soldiers.

There were eleven soldiers killed, four of whom were officers, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Britain-based war monitor said the strikes “destroyed arms depots and a Syrian air defence radar” and also targeted an infantry unit.

The Israeli army said its “fighter jets struck military infrastructure and mortars belonging to the Syrian army in response to the launches towards Israel yesterday (Tuesday)”.

Syria's two main airports, in Aleppo and Damascus, were rendered inoperable by Israeli strikes on Sunday, according to Syrian official media.

Since Palestinian Islamist terrorists from Hamas invaded Israel on October 7 and embarked on a rampage that left more than 1,400 people dead, according to Israeli authorities, Israel has been encircling the Gaza Strip.

In the worst attack in Israel's history, they also took more than 220 hostages.

Israel's response has included ruthless airstrikes and an almost complete land, sea, and air blockade of Gaza, where the Hamas-run health ministry reports 5,791 deaths thus far in the conflict.

Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes against its northern neighbour, Syria, over the course of the country's more than ten-year civil war. The main targets of these strikes have been Syrian army sites and Hezbollah fighters as well as other forces supported by Iran.
