According to the UN's humanitarian relief organisation, 264,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been displaced as a result of Israeli airstrikes against Hamas militants.

According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), they are taking refuge in schools, with family members, or neighbours.

The Islamist organisation Hamas, which controls Gaza, attacked Israel on a huge scale on Saturday, killing at least 1,200 people and capturing about 100 more.

Israel retaliated by continuing its airstrikes on the crowded seaside enclave.

Health officials in Gaza report that at least 900 individuals have already passed away.

Israeli airstrikes were reported by OCHA to have hit multiple homes in Gaza.

More than 1,500 dwelling units were destroyed or badly damaged, according to OCHA, which cited the Ministry of Public Works and dwelling in Gaza.

Additionally, five facilities that provided 500,000 people with water and sanitation were damaged.

The population of the Palestinian territory is over two million.
