Isreal airstrikes hit Gaza refugee camp, death toll rises
As the death toll from the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas rises, the main population centre in the Gaza Strip is coming under attack.
The Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza was struck by an Israeli strike on Tuesday that was directed towards a Hamas commander, resulting in numerous fatalities.
Reportedly, the Jabalya refugee camp is the biggest in Gaza, housing thousands of civilians seeking safety from the fighting.
150 people were reported injured, according to Gaza's health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas. However, a local hospital reported 400 patients, 120 of whom were fatal.
Following the Islamist group's deadly cross-border rampage into Israel on October 7, Israel resumed bombing the heavily populated Gaza Strip from the air, sea, and land on Thursday morning. This was the start of a new round of bombardment.
Bashar Mourad, director of the Al Quds hospital in Gaza City where up to 14,000 displaced people are reportedly sheltering, told CNN that the air strikes were “getting closer to the hospitalâ€.
According to Gaza's health ministry, 3,760 children are among the 9,061 people who have died in the city.
The ministry further stated that there have been nearly 2,600 reports of missing persons, including 1,150 children who are either missing or buried under the debris.
Israel had ordered the evacuation of city residents, accusing Hamas of constantly "hiding, as they do, behind civilians."
But only on Wednesday did hundreds of foreigners and Palestinians begin entering Egypt.
