JIFORM to collaborate with Chinese embassy
The Chinese embassy in Nigeria has been encouraged by the Journalists International Forum For Migration, JIFORM, to collaborate with the group to further promote trade facilitation and migration issues through media education.
On a recent visit to the Lagos office of the embassy, Ajibola Abayomi, President of the JIFORM, requested assistance in developing the skills of journalists covering migration to better grasp the trade prospects in China and on migration reporting.
“Chinese people, no doubt, are endowed with trade, technology, and construction skills. The JIFORM has been promoting the purposeful migration of Nigerians to China and several countries over the years.
“We are here to seek your support regarding knowledge-sharing to improve the capacity of the JIFORM members in the reportage of economic and migration policies involving China.
“We are also open to collaboration that will encourage regular migration to strengthen the relationship between us and your embassy, as well as promoting better working relationships with the Nigerian government on foreign policies†Ajibola said.
In response, Jin Ming Yu, the embassy's deputy consul general, thanked the JIFORM for the visit and promised to look over any recommendations to help the development of media capabilities.
Yu claimed that over the years, many Nigerians had opened up shop in China, and that Chinese nationals had also contributed significantly to the development of Nigeria's technological and building industries.
The deputy envoy reaffirmed his desire to collaborate with JIFORM to spread accurate information regarding the embassy's trade and investment efforts in Nigeria.
Ajibola was the leader of the JIFORM mission, which also comprised Bamiteko Rotimi Williams and Bola Adebola.
Almost 300 journalists and other volunteers from several continents who cover migration issues make up the non-profit organization JIFORM.
The organization has grown significantly as of 2019 and is now a significant player in organizing a number of local and global capacity-building training programs for journalists and other stakeholders. In partnership with the Nekotech Center of Excellence in Accra, Ghana, it established the annual African Migration Summit in 2021. The West African Media Migration Summit followed in Lome, Togo, and the third Global Migration Summit was held in Toronto, Canada, in October 2022.
The international migration summit was held in Brooklyn from November 2–4, 2022, under the auspices of the media foundation and City University of New York City, USA.
