John Azuta-Mbata elected as Ohanaeze Ndigbo
Ohanaeze Ndigbo has elected former senator John Azuta-Mbata as its president-general. The Igbo socio-cultural organisation in Enugu state had a meeting on Friday and elected Azuta-Mbata, who served as Rivers East's senator from 1999 to 2007.
To manage its operations over the ensuing four years, the association also chose additional new executives. Fidelis Chukwu is replaced as Ohanaeze Ndigbo's president-general by Azuta-Mbata.
Chukwu, a native of Imo state, was chosen in December to succeed Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on July 25, 2024.
Following George Obiozor's death in 2022, Iwuanyanwu was appointed president-general of the organisation.
Both Obiozor and Iwuanyanwu were Imo state natives. Delta, Rivers, and the southeast states alternate as Ohanaeze Ndigbo's president. The seat is presently being held by Rivers State.
