Kaduna Govt reintroduces payment of school fees by senior secondary school students

The government of Kaduna has reinstated the requirement that senior secondary school pupils in the state pay tuition.

The declaration was made by Kaduna's secondary school principals in a letter from the city's commissioner for education, Halima Lawal.

The reinstatement of paying school fees, according to Lawal, is a result of the state government's decreasing financial resources.

Each senior secondary student, according to her, is required to pay N2,000 per session.

“The increase in the population of school children in the state necessitates the expansion and renovation of existing structures, provision of teaching and learning materials to provide a functional and conducive learning environment,” NAN quoted Lawal as saying.

“However, the dwindling resources at the disposal of the state due to the harsh economic conditions of the times, have made it compelling to reintroduce school fees in our secondary schools.

“Students have the option to make full payment at the beginning of the session or in three instalments over the three terms.

“All principals are requested to note that the payment of the fee is with effect from the second term of the 2022/2023 session.

“Modalities of payment would be communicated in due course.”

The change occurs a number of years after Kaduna's governor, Nasir el-Rufai, mandated free secondary education for all female pupils.

He gave the order to start offering free basic and secondary education in the state in 2020.
