Kano begins vaccination against polio
The government of Kano State has reaffirmed its commitment to aiding in the fight against the polio virus's comeback in some states of the federation.
The promise was made by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the official beginning of a polio vaccination campaign in Gabasawa LGA.
Following Nigeria's designation as polio-free by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on August 25, 2020, Yusuf raised alarm over the recurrence of polio in 26 states, including Kano, through his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
According to a statement released by his spokesman, Gwarzo, Governor Abba chose to launch the campaign in Gabasawa because, according to health records, it has the highest percentage of unvaccinated children in the state.
He said that numerous domestic and foreign donors, including WHO, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the African Field Epidemiology Network, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, the Dangote Foundation, and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHDA), had contributed funds to the effort to combat the polio virus.
Dr. Abubakar Labaran, the commissioner of health, pleaded with parents to assist in making sure their kids obtain the vaccination.
He said that this week will see the start of the Kano Primary Healthcare Development Agency's distribution of syringes for immunisation in LGAs.
The District Head of Gabasawa, Alhaji Sani Dawaki, spoke on behalf of the Emir of Gaya, Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, who thanked the state government for starting the exercise in the Gabasawa LGA and asked for improvements to the local hospitals and an increase in the number of physicians to provide better health services.
