Kano closes tomato market over prostitution, adultery
The Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market was closed by the Garun Mallam Local Government Area of Kano State because it was allegedly used as a venue for prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other unethical acts.
According to credible information, the local council authority took steps to bring the market back to normalcy because of the claimed immorality being committed by several young people and married ladies there.
Aminu Kadawa, the chairman of the Council, confirmed the development and stated that all market occupants were issued a seven-day ultimatum to leave the property or face the full force of the law.
He said: “Looking at how the market has become a centre for prostitution and other immoral activities contrary to the purpose of the market, it has to be closed indefinitely to restore sanity.”
While applauding the decision, Commissioner of Tourism and Management Aisha Saji said that while she was Commissioner for Women Affairs, she led a team of security officers and Hisbah officials in a raid at the same market where 43 people were arrested for prostitution and illegal alcohol sales, including nine males and 34 females between the ages of 15 and 18.
“Shockingly, 14 of the arrested individuals were confirmed to be HIV-positive, with 10 aware of their status, while four were unaware.
“The suspects hailed not only from Kano, but also from neighbouring states, including Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue and Taraba,” she said.
The Commissioner also recalled that, among other things, she had prepared a report during her time there suggesting that the market be demolished in order to build a skill-acquisition facility to combat local unemployment.
“This closure should not just mark the end of immoral activities but also serve as a stepping stone for development.
“Establishing a skills development institution in this area will not only curb unemployment but also equip our youths with sustainable means of livelihood,” Saji emphasised.
