Kidnapped Anambra lawyer set free after 15 days in captivity
Chukwubuikem Azoro, the secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association's Idemili Branch in Anambra State, was liberated from the clutches of as-yet-unidentified gunmen. It was reported that Azoro was set free early on Monday morning following his 15-day captivity by the captors.
Details of Azoro's release were provided to our correspondent on Monday by a source who is a member of the state NBA but spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to comment on the topic.
He claimed that the lawyer was set free following the kidnappers' payment of an undisclosed ransom.
He said, “Yes, he was released in the early hours of today and he has reunited with his family. The kidnappers released him after collecting some amount of money as ransom. I don’t know the exact amount.
“Members of the NBA had embarked on a one-week boycott of all courts in the state to press for his release, but now that he has been released, the boycott has been suspended immediately and the body has also urged relevant authorities to ensure they put a stop to it to forestall future occurrence.”
Two weeks after his wedding, on Saturday, May 11, 2024, the lawyer was kidnapped by several as-yet-unidentified gunmen in the Abagana region of Njikoka Local Government region in Anambra State.
