Kwara senator, Saliu Mustapha defects from APC
Kwara Central's National Assembly representative, Senator Saliu Mustapha, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter dated August 14, 2026, Mustapha informed the APC Ward Chairman of Gambari Ward 1 in the state's Ilorin East Local Government Area of his resignation.
The senator stated that he made his choice after discussing recent developments within the party in the state with his voters, supporters, political colleagues, stakeholders, and other well-meaning Kwarans for weeks.
He claimed that the APC's dedication to unity, good government, and public service was the reason he became a founder member. Nevertheless, he voiced worry that the party's current Kwara leadership had strayed from those ideals.
“However, recent developments within the APC in our State, particularly the leadership of the Party in Kwara State, have departed from the founding core principles of collective unity and internal democracy on which the APC was built,” he said.
Mustapha claimed that his faith in the party's leadership in the state had been damaged by the event.
“I believe political leadership must be anchored on integrity, competence, accountability and a sincere commitment to the collective interest of the people. The current leadership of the Party in Kwara State has fallen short of these standards and this have eroded my confidence in them,” he said.
The senator emphasised that his resignation was the result of "careful reflection and extensive consultations" with pertinent stakeholders and members of his senatorial constituency.
He stated that his choice was motivated by his conviction that the people, values, and purpose should continue to be at the core of political leadership.
