Labour gives Kwara govt 14-day ultimatum

As a result of organised labor's 14-day ultimatum to the state government for not meeting its demands, significant industrial unrest is imminent in Kwara State.

The demands include not implementing the N35,000 wage award for all categories of workers in the state after the federal government removed the fuel subsidy, according to Murtala Saheed Olayinka, Tunde Joseph, and Saliu Suleiman, the respective chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) in the state.

Organised labour also voiced complaints at a press conference in Ilorin regarding the state government's unwillingness to domesticate and implement 40% of the federally approved peculiar allowances.

Other demands include not wanting to pay outstanding arrears to local government workers and paying pensioners the adjustments that have occurred since the federal government approved the current new minimum wage in 2019.

The body also bemoaned the underfunding of state-owned universities, the unwillingness to accept and properly place Kwara Hotel employees without any conditions, and the improper integration of the Water Corporation employees who were redeployed into the Kwara Civil Service core.

The labour movement claimed that it was compelled to issue the ultimatum due to the state government's flagrant disregard for the demands made by its employees, which raised concerns about peace and harmony within the workplace.
