Lafayette woman arrested for plotting to assassinate Trump
On August 16, 2025, Nathalie Rose Jones, a 50-year-old Lafayette, Indiana resident, was taken into custody after allegedly traveling to Washington, D.C., with the intention of "kidnapping and assassinating" President Donald Trump.
Jones made obscene threats on Facebook and Instagram, including one that read, "I am willing to sacrificially kill this POTUS by disembowelling him and cutting out his trachea with Liz Cheney and all The Affirmation present," according to a press release issued on August 18, 2025 by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia.
She also mentioned Trump's planned "arrest and removal ceremony." Following the identification of Jones as the author of these posts, the U.S. Secret Service opened an investigation.
She allegedly acknowledged making the threats in an August 15 interview, telling investigators that she would try to assassinate the president "if given the opportunity," claiming a desire to exact revenge for the deaths caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.
Later on, she said she had changed her mind about hurting Trump. Jones is accused of delivering interstate communications containing threats to abduct or harm another individual, as well as threatening the president's life.
Both are federal offenses with a maximum sentence of five years in prison each, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. “Threatening the life of the President is one of the most serious crimes and one that will be met with swift and unwavering prosecution,” emphasized U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.
