Lagos ban on Okada operations to kick off soon

Prior to June 1, 2022, the start of the ban on commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as “Okada” riders, the Lagos State Government agreed to deploy the Anti-Okada Enforcement Unit. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who previously announced the planned ban on Okada's activities in 6 local government areas and nine Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), to kick start on June 1st, had insisted that it should be enforced after the leadership of the Okada union demanded an extension of the date. Traffic Commissioner Dr. Fredrick Oladeinde said Tuesday that the purpose of setting up the squad was to ensure effective enforcement of the ban. According to Oladeinde, “In line with the start of the ban on motorcycle operations in (6) LGs and the respective LCDAs under them, the Department of Transport is establishing an anti-Okada unit. "The event will take place at 2 pm at Adeyemi Bero Hall, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja." However, the latest ban followed a series of concerns raised by a traditional ruler in the Lekki region, Oniru of IruLand, Oba Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, and residents about the urgent need to avert security breaches in the region and the state as a whole. The governor has directed security forces to enforce the prohibition order in listed councils. The councils involved are Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland and Apapa and comprise nine LCDAs. The governor said the decision is in line with the State's Transport Sector Reform Act of 2018 to immediately deal with the chaos and threat created by Okada's operations in the listed areas. The governor insisted that Okada operations on the highways are not safe and will no more be allowed.   "
