Lagos govt closes Ogba mall, Ajah market for illegal refuse disposal
The Ogba City Mall in Ikeja and the Ajah Market in Eti-Osa, Lagos State, were sealed on Sunday by the Lagos State Government in coordination with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority and the State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences.
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority's Director of Public Affairs, Folashade Kadiri, revealed this in a statement that was provided to PUNCH Metro on Sunday.
The statement claims that along the Ajah Jubilee Bridge and BRT corridor, the enforcement team also cleared buildings and shantytowns occupied by illegal traders.
Regarding the development, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, commented that it was part of the administration's ongoing campaign against filth and irresponsible trash disposal by marketplaces and commercial establishments throughout the state.
Traders and corporate stakeholders were advised to take action to maintain a clean and healthy workplace by Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority.
The statement partly reads, “The Lagos State Government has shut Ogba City Mall, Ikeja, and Ajah Market, Eti-Osa, for sundry waste disposal offences.
“The action was carried out by the combined enforcement teams of the Lagos Waste Management Authority; State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, LASTMA and LAGSEC (KAI).
“Commenting on the development, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, noted that the enforcement action was a continuation of the administration’s onslaught on filth and indiscriminate waste disposal by markets and business facilities around the state.
“He said: “We are stepping up action on this administration’s zero tolerance for filth and reckless waste disposal by traders and business facilities. We have continuously warned business owners to expect action if they refuse to do the needful to sustain the environment. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration will not relent in its pursuit of this lofty objective for overriding public good.â€
He also mentioned that Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the managing director and chief executive officer of LAWMA, stated that the zero tolerance campaign was ongoing and that it advised markets and business stakeholders to take action to guarantee a clean and hygienic environment.
