Lagos govt demolishes Alaba market International buildings
On Friday, the Lagos State Government started the procedure to remove the troubled buildings in the Alaba International Market in the state's Ojo Local Government.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the joint exercise was started by the enforcement team of the Lagos State Task Force and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).
The team who went around to reseal a number of buildings that had previously received several quit seal notifications from LASBCA said that the action was taken to avert disaster.
They recommended people leave the structurally flawed structures, which they claimed had become too dangerous to remain in.
The enforcement director led the media around and pointed out some storey buildings that were already sinking but were being extended with more floors.
One of the sinking plazas had a front row of stores that were exquisitely decorated with tiles and other materials, while the back was leaned on swampy ground.
Before starting repairs, some of the dealers who spoke with journalists said that they had paid for various construction clearances.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr. Gbolahan Oki, responded to the issue by telling journalists that the government will demolish the building to save lives.
